In spite of aggravating circumstances.

‘African Teacher’(Detail) — Anthony Bumhira, Gallery Delta, The Annual ‘Summer’ Exhibition.

In memory of Anthony Bumhira 1985–2020.

The descriptor ‘African’ has at times been employed as a category for exclusion. The color Black has been used to homogenize people of different backgrounds and experiences. None of the forgoing complications could restrain Anthony Bumhira from reaching out for the ideal in his painting African Teacher.

‘African Teacher’— Anthony Bumhira.

A sunny hue fills the canvas like a field of sunflowers. Like a crack in a wall, a brown streak runs down one side . The reddish orange patch going up the other side could be the beginning of another paint job. Symbolic colors and the interesting composition convey a rational optimism.

The subject is positioned dead center of the canvas. A man whose complexion is decidedly Black. Without recognizable features the face is erased of divisive tribal associations. His formal white shirt and black trousers are impeccable. The power tie is neither too long, nor too short. Hand propped on the hip is a sign of poise that can also translate as exhaustion. A ruffled collar and shirttails suggest prior activity.

The miniature size of African Teacher draws the viewer close. Such scrutiny on the noble profession in Zimbabwe may reveal a heartbreaking reality. Bumhira’s vision is sold on bold brush strokes and bright colors. The audience is invited to be intimate with the subject, and celebrate the ideal in humanity.
